This month Big George takes us up high in the Llanberis Pass to visit one of the very best Welsh boulders.
Dear NWB.com,
As the clouds lift, so to do our spirits, for it is now time to visit the high places. What finer venue could there be than GR 615560 in the upper reaches of Cwm Glas Mawr (50m from the path up into Cwm Glas just before it becomes a scramble and adjacent to the towering monlith of Diffwys Ddu/Cyrn Las). Here we can enjoy the pleasures of The Shelf, aka The Aircraft Carrier, aka The Desroy Boulder.
The obvious sitter just left of the steep western arete offers a wonderful problem at V4/Font 6bish (Panton et al).
The main event however is the obvious right-to-left traverse of the seemingly infinite slopers. Attempts by NWB.com's resident editor and yours truly came to nothing, the long walk proving to have a disproportionately energy sapping effect. It took the superior sloper travelling skills of the evergreen Desroy to finally conqueror this very high altitude problem. It is said, due to its immense length and ferocity, to be the sloper equivalent of a fair ride at Alton Towers. Get up there, and hold on tight!
Regards,
Big G
