Mike grab-matching the lip on King of the Swingers 7B+ Photos: Kieran King

Drew Mulcahy on Billy Goat Gruff 6C+

A rather poorly Billy Goat Gruff Photo: Si Panton

Yesterday Mike Goldthorp climbed a brilliant new dyno problem on the boulders below Clogwyn y Wenallt in Nant Gwynant. King of the Swingers 7B+ tackles the obvious central line on the attractive boulder which sits just above the path leading from the top corner of the Llyn Gwynant campsite to the Elephantitus Cave.

Kieran King, who filmed the ascent (see below), described it as “North Wales' answer to Rainbow Rocket in Font!” The resemblance, it has to be said, is striking; check out the link below to see what Kieran means.

In the film, Mike also climbs a left hand line which gains the lip of the steepness before traversing back right and mantelling over. This excellent 6C+ problem has been claimed by various people over the years and the first ascent is uncertain. A name of Billy Goat Gruff has been suggested for it (any objections, please get in touch).
